Skin care during pregnancy
The widespread, age-old notion that women look luscious and dazzling when they are pregnant is not untrue. And then there is the highly celebrated ‘glow’. However, all that extra hormonal activity often has the opposite effect too!
During pregnancy, when your body is going through changes - and regardless of all the things that are going on that keep you busy during this period - attention to skin care is also very important.
Acne is very common during pregnancy. Change in hormonal levels is the main cause of pregnancy acnes. Eyeing those zits may instinctively make you buy the over-the-counter preparations, but resist that temptation.
During pregnancy, you need to be extra careful about the ingredients used in the creams and other preparations. Avoid products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or any of the retinoids. It is best to first opt for drug-free home remedies.
Consult your dermatologist before you buy any creams, medicines etc. On the other hand, generally speaking, using lotions that remove hair chemically is quite safe. But keep in mind that during pregnancy your skin may get extra sensitive: it is best to try out on a small patch of skin before you slather away!
Also safe to use are sunscreens. The ingredients that do go deep inside the skin do so in such small quantities that you need not worry about it.
The problem is that the sheer variety of the over-the-counter drugs and the commercial skin preparations available can make one overwhelmed and confused.
Therefore, during pregnancy it is wise to consult your dermatologist. With all the changes and the remedies, the treatments and the preparations that a pregnant woman undergoes, it is often the case that skin care falls short of priority, or is done casually like in normal conditions.
Remember, skin care too, can have a considerable effect on your comfort during pregnancy.
