Review: Mr X is a love story, puerile thriller and a risible revenge saga with a dash of random sci-fi thrown into the pot. Anti-terror agent Raghuram Rathod (Emraan Hashmi) is dragged into a dirty game by his own boss, ACP Bhardwaj (Arunoday Singh), who has his sight set on the post of Mumbai police commissioner. The vicious conspiracy, which centers on the elimination of the chief minister, culminates in a refinery blaze. Raghu is given up for dead. But, thanks to divine intervention, he survives. He ends up in a pharmaceutical lab where an untested anti-radiation potion triggers total cell regeneration and turns him invisible. Alarmed at first, he spots an opportunity in his new-found invisibility. From behind the veil of his power, he decides to mount an all-out assault on those that wronged him.
The concept of an invisible vigilante hero was done best in the Anil Kapoor starrer Mr. India. Vikram Bhatt adopts the same tone with an element of spunk. But the story of an aggrieved cop fails to gather unanimous connect because it never soars above being a single man's desire to take revenge. The film's science-fiction value, too, is never fully explored. Hashmi, however, attempts to bring a heartfelt earnestness to his character. He shares a warm chemistry with Amyra, who has a lot better screen presence since her last film Issaq. Arunoday Singh is suavely dangerous but his character lacks depth.
While the film does have an interesting premise on paper, sadly it doesn't live up to the hype it created prior to its release. It's still a watchable flick but don't expect it to blow your mind.
