The Big Sick

Screenplay: Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon
Cast: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Anupam kher, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano
Runtime: 120min
Rating: 7.5/10
PLOT: The movie, based on a real-life cross-cultural story, focuses on the Pakistani comedian Kumail Nanjiani and an American graduate student Emily Gardner. Kumail and Emily first meet each other at one of Kumail's stand-up show and casually begin their relationship, which later faces challenges due to their cultural differences.
REVIEW: The movie basically has a very common storyline about cultural differences and the consequences for trying to ignore the differences, but when you realize that the movie is based on a real story and the actor himself is acting as his younger version while telling his own story, you would definitely be excited to find out more. A few comical scenes here and there will make you laugh but only because they are somewhat relatable and humorous per se. The whole cast did a great job all together; specifically, Kumail Nanjiani acted very well and his performance will make you wonder how he must have felt when acting as himself. Nonetheless he did manage to show how important the story is to him and how the struggle was dealing with cultural differences.
Zoe Kazan's doe eyes and sincere acting was good enough to be appreciated. The fault in this movie arises with its predictability. The scenes don't lead up to much and it is easy to guess what is going to happen next. As far as movies based on real life stories go, it definitely isn't on top of the list but can be considered a decent drama film at best. Viewers may also think that due to many common elements, they have watched movies like this before, which definitely doesn't bode well for any form of storytelling. However, it still managed to garner quite a lot of box office success so perhaps it is meant to be enjoyed by a mainstream selection of audience more than strict film critics. Despite everything, The Big Sick was worth a watch and recommended for anyone, especially those who have faced issues regarding cultural differences in their own lives.
