Review: The franchise is popular for being light-hearted, filled with popular charismatic personalities playing original characters, appealing to a variety of viewers. The sequel mainly revolves in Macau, where the nightclubs, casinos and dubious populace are showcased amid a string of events.
The replacement of Lula (Lizzy Kaplan) over Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) is a refreshing one since this actor is packed with high energy, pertaining to her character as a geek trick specialist. The addition of extra antagonists, Merritt McKinney's twin brother (both played by Woody Harrelson), and Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe) goes well with the plot. Harrelson's double-portrayal is exciting to watch making it both annoying and fun to see both sides of the siblings. All of the stars have played their parts with coherence and utmost ease. Mark Ruffalo's part is especially well executed, expressing his agony and childhood trauma relating to his father perfectly.
The movie contains a good amount of plot holes, often explained by the act of hypnosis making it hard to not look at the movie pessimistically. The plot of this film is cleverly intertwined with the original one; however, the movie is less believable due to the complex paradoxes and hard-to-believe tricks that are not explained elaborately.
The movie is indeed fun, fast-paced and forces the audience to let their guards down and be fooled by the appeal of magic. However, it falls short compared to the original film.
