Mamo's Comeback to the Silver Screen

Rafi Hossain

Zakia Bari Mamo was discovered by Lux in 2006 through their famed beauty contest. There are many media personalities in Bangladesh who were discovered by Lux, and I must say they are doing well. But, not every one of Lux's superstars is memorable, or they couldn't continue on the path of stardom which Lux launched them onto. This is surprising to me, because the grandeur and scale with which Lux promotes their superstars is really something else. But, even then, some of them were not as successful. Perhaps the selection process is not as rigorous or challenging as it should be to ensure that the brightest and most highly potential superstars come to the limelight. In Bangladesh, the entire concept of talent hunt and beauty pageant for the media was launched by the late Shahadat Chowdhury, the Founding Editor of Anondo Bichitra and Bichitra, through 'Lux-Anondodhara Photogenic'. Shahadat bhai really had a unique eye for talent – all the stars that came to the limelight through his program are still significant personalities in the media. Shahadat bhai was probably the best 'showbiz editor' of Bangladesh, a person I really look up to. It doesn't seem to me that anyone can fill his shoes. Amongst the more recent talent discoveries of Lux is Zakia Bari Mamo – featured on the cover of Star Showbiz today. She's one that stands out. She is as beautiful as she is intelligent, and also trained in the art of dramatics. Most importantly, on screen, she has a strong presence – her skills as an actor deserves commendation. Directors who have worked with her are very fond of her and say she is reliable. Thus, my expectation from Mamo is very high indeed. She made waves with her first film, 'Daruchini Dwip' (2006), and although she has not been seen in movies since, she has been very active on television. Over the last year or so, she has been attached to two mainstream films, 'Prem Korbo Tomar Shathe' and 'Chhuye Dile Mon' marking her comeback to the silver screen in 2014. Mamo wishes to concentrate on films in the future and I welcome this intention since we need better acting talent in Bangladeshi movies. The success of these two films is monumental to Mamo's career ahead, since how well she is received in them by the audience will determine where Mamo goes from here. The Star Showbiz team will be watching Mamo's films as soon as they are released and hope our readers will join us at the cinema halls. We wish Mamo a world of success!
