LIVING WITH THE STARS

BARSHA

– JUST THE BEGINNING

Rafi Hossain
Barsha

Barsha has all the qualities of a true Bangladeshi star. She commands a strong presence onscreen, is very well accepted by her audience, and definitely has the looks. But her popularity is embedded with Ananta Jalil's personality and screen presence. They are more popular as a couple than they are individually. It is difficult to even talk about their popularity individually, in the world of cinema; they are two sides of the same coin. So, it is a fool's pursuit to try to understand to what extent of Barsha's success belongs to Barsha, and to what extent it comes from being Ananta's girl. What is really interesting though is the speculation of where it goes from here, because, to me, it seems that Barsha is just getting warmed up. This is just the beginning. Barsha is a much needed addition to the world of cinema, and she has all the perquisites - she is smart, catchy, can play the damsel in distress and the salacious item girl. But, keeping the future in mind, where she really needs to focus on improving is her acting skills. She definitely has the foundation, but she has a long way to go in becoming a full-fledged versatile actor. But I don't believe that is beyond her reach, but it will require a sound approach and planning on her part – she has to be able to visualize where she wants to be in 5 to 10 years as an actor, will she be playing the same role again and again in different settings, or will be present new roles which make the audience marvel at her talents? Although we haven't seen Barsha without Ananta on the silver screen, and wondered if she can hold her own, we have seen her doing exceedingly well in television advertisements, and she has indeed done well in them. Whether Barsha will always act with Ananta Jalil or will venture out independently in a film is definitely her and Ananta's private decision, but if she is to become a versatile actor and if she wants to try out different kinds of roles, she will inevitably need to consider doing so. And even if she doesn't, and this is far more important, both she and Ananta should be thinking about breaking out of the stereotype and think of a female role which is the main character of the movie, giving Barsha the chance to show her fan base that she is much more than a girl with good looks – that she can carry a movie on her shoulders. That is when her acting skills will really be put to the test. To me, Barsha is a smart actor who has a potentially bright future, to what extent she can harness that potential depends on how much she learns, adapts and grows as an actor over time Maybe there is a surprise waiting for us in the not too distant future when the dynamic couple gives us a film that is both different and novel, one which we will cherish for years to come.
