The communications minister today ordered that an engineer of the Roads and Highways Department, who was responsible for repair works of Jessore-Khulna highway before the Eid-ul-Fitr, explain his failure in doing so.

Obaidul Quader issued the order to serve show cause notice upon Mohammad Ali, additional chief engineer of Khulna region when he found the highway unfit for traffic movement, reports our Jessore correspondent.

Ali was accompanying the minister during visit of the highway at Noapara in Jessore around 12:30pm.

Mehedi Hasan and Md Saifuddin, executive engineers of Kushtia and Satkhira R&H Department respectively, have been given the additional charges to complete the repair work within three days, Quader said while talking to reporters during his visit.

Three kilometres, out of 66km area on the highway, are in dilapidated condition, which is not suitable for traffic movement, the minister said.

“I have visited the highway for seven times in the last two years but around 1.5 kilometres area on the highway are still in worst condition, causing immense sufferings to the commuters,” he said.

“I am giving words. I am taking the responsibility of the highway, which will be repaired for long term through regular contactors after the Eid,” he added.

The minister further said, “I would not say that media provide confusing information. But if someone tries to escape from his or her responsibilities by making the media scapegoat, we will not give them the scope.”

Earlier on July 21, the minister criticised media for publishing reports along with photos showing the poor condition of different highways.

Quader on July 12 announced that all the highways across the country would be repaired by July 20 to ease vehicular movement ahead of Eid.
