Why the room is so special
Some movies make us laugh, others make us cry. Then there are those movies which make us feel all of the emotions at the same time. The Room is one such movie, and in this article I'm going to look at what aspects make it a modern classic.
1. Pure Quality: The Room is universally recognised as "the best worst movie of all time". My sincerest apologies to Ananta Jalil, but there really is no movie more deserving of that title than The Room. With a plot flimsier than bakorkhani, characters with as much depth as the Kardashians, dialogue that even Bangla Cinema would scoff at, and cinematography on par with wedding videos- this is the worst movie you'll ever see. Any of these flaws alone could ruin a film; all of them together, however, make for a viewing experience that will keep you laughing from start to finish. Who said two (or multiple) wrongs don't make a right?
2. Ignorance is bliss: One thing that comes across right away is how hard the cast tried. They were all seemingly unaware of how hilariously cringe-worthy the scenes were, as well as how the movie made little to no sense. In every scene you'll notice them trying in earnest to make a good movie. To be more like a "real Hollywood movie", this movie also coughed up an ambitious budget — a cool $6,000,000 was spent on making the movie, even though it earned just $1800 during its regular runtime. Talk about big dreams. Our main man Tommy Wiseau also suffered from delusions of grandeur. No doubt he thought he was a Hollywood heartthrob, but unfortunately, the rest of the sane world had other ideas.
3. The man, the myth, the legend: While we're on the topic, let's talk a bit about the enigmatic Tommy. The man continues to baffle people to this day, and not just because of his wonderful acting. He regularly denies having an accent, and despite his skin tone, accent and mannerisms all suggesting Eastern European descent, he insists he's as free as a bald eagle. Tommy is also notoriously shady when it comes to money, as he never answers where the funding for the movie came from. Now I'm not saying he's selling bootlegged copies of My Little Pony in Mother Russia, but it's not inconceivable either.
4. Unanswered questions: As a consequence of The Room having such a well-thought-out plot, numerous questions remain in the viewer's mind even after the credits roll. What happened to the man who threatened Dennie? Was he arrested? Also, the fate of Lisa's mother — did they cure her, the way they're curing people every day? In the last scene, Denny wasn't carrying his football. Did someone take it? Is doggy okay?
All of these questions, no doubt intentionally left in by Tommy, make you think about the movie and its implications. If you don't like answering such difficult questions, then this movie will TEAR YOU APART LISA.
Even if none of these points have convinced you of The Room's merits, the movie is worth watching just to hear the famous dialogue about internal conflict — "I did not hit her. It's not true, it's bulls*it. I did not hit her, I DID NAHT. O hai Mark."
