The Secret Life of Bangladeshi Teenagers
While many of us have as much approved freedom as a caged chicken, we all have activities that would raise a lot of eyebrows or even create minor scandals if, God forbid, it gets into the wrong ears.
Late night conversations
Whether texts or calls, everyone has done this at some point. The calm of 3 a.m. is peak time when adda with friends and cheesy conversations with your significant other occurs. It's somehow more interesting when the whole house is asleep and occasional honking of trucks is heard. And what happens when you get caught? Say Caretel called you. Or that you were practicing for a play if your mother asks why she heard you reciting quotes from Romeo and Juliet.
Eloping with friends
Being friends with your chauffeur has its perks, you can bribe them into covering for you when you skip coaching and run down to a cafe to chill with a bunch of friends. No car? No problem, an alternate way to go around it is to tell your parents your friend has their car, your friend tells their parents you have your car, and then you both take a rickshaw.
Screen scrutiny
What we do on a phone or laptop screen all day is a great topic of interest to others. It's very ironic when your mother asks who you're texting and you deny texting altogether, only to go ahead and text a bunch of people about this matter. But the struggle is real when you are trying to minimise Sims but your PC is way too slow. Some of us are sneakier, and have mastered the art of hastily shutting down the laptop/phone and pretending to sleep at 4 am. Sometimes you forget to pretend to sleep and instead sit on your bed looking all suspicious, thus providing more reasons for you parents to perform a security check that takes more time than the check points to get into Gulshan. Moreover, on the rare occasions that we do watch TV, it's handy to keep Cartoon Network on the return button.
Hiding your significant other
One must go to great lengths to conceal the identity of their partner to prevent a mini scandal in the family. These include the classic act of changing their contact name to a same sex name and tricking your parents into thinking you're best friends with them. Bribes are an integral part when dealing with this matter, like getting your cousin ceremoniously present you with gifts you have received from your girlfriend/ boyfriend or asking your friend to third wheel on your date because you want to prove to your parents it's a casual hangout.
Wait. Are these even secrets any more now?
