Coloured Christmas

Karim Waheed

This headline on my newsfeed grabbed my attention a few days ago: “Fox News host says Jesus and Santa are white”. Instant reaction: WTF(ish).
But then I cooled down and pondered over a calming cup of cocoa. Can we really blame this ignorant, racist, sensationalist media person for this foolery? Haven't we grown up on a steady dose of commercialisation of Christmas (and other holidays that the whole world celebrates) by Hollywood that we have come to love and gotten attached to?
Yes, I've seen the “coloured” Santas at Sonargaon Hotel but as a colleague put it: “I feel confused when I see a brown Santa.” Dilemma. Damnit.
Should we lose sleep over Santa's complexion/race/nationality? We're talking about an obese ol' dude in a red suit with a large sack intruding into your home in the wee hours; do you care whether he's black or white or yellow or brown or green?
In this issue, we imagine what Santa might do if he made it to D-Town. We also offer suggestions on what to do when you find yourself aimless, bored and on the verge of making questionable choices. There's something for frape victims and budding frapists too.
Regardless of the colour of your skin, creed, political convictions -- have a holly, jolly Christmas.
