Seminar on Work for Human Development at EWU
East West University (EWU) Center for Research and Training (CRT) arranged a seminar on "Work for Human Development: 2015 Human Development Report", in collaboration with UGC/World Bank funded sub-project "Knowledge Transfer and Capacity Development of Academic Staff" on January 12, 2016 in EWU Campus, Aftabnagar, Dhaka.
The keynote speaker of the seminar was Dr. Selim Jahan, Director, Human Development Report Office of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He said that, in the Human Development Index of the twenty-first century, the position of Bangladesh is quite well compared to the neighbours. However, now the country needs to pay more attention on sustainable jobs, stop discrimination against women at workplaces and decrease the number of dropouts from secondary education.
Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, BOT, EWU and former Governor, Bangladesh Bank attended as the chief guest of the seminar. Prof. Dr. M M Shahidul Hassan, VC of EWU attended as the special guest. Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, Chairperson, EWUCRT and Member, BOT, EWU chaired the programme.
Members of BOT, Deans of faculties, Chairpersons of different departments, faculty members, students and administrative officers of the university were also present on the occasion.
EDU welcomes new students for Spring 2016
East Delta University (EDU) Chittagong hosted its spring 2016 orientation on January 14, 2016 at their Probartak Building. This year, their orientation layout was similar to those of international universities abroad. After Registrar Manzuma Murshed, Treasurer Shams Ud Doha and VC Prof. Muhammad Sekandar Khan welcomed new students, guest speakers from Australia, Dr. Mamta Chowdhury and Dr. Khorshed Chowdhury were also able to impart their wisdom on all attendees. Afterwards, students were split in groups and tour all the facilities and services EDU offers, such as the Registrar's Office, IT, library, etc. The programme was very comprehensive and interactive, which hopefully will translate to the beginning of a wonderful, mind-expanding journey for the new EDU-ians.
GUB celebrates 14th Founding Day
Green University of Bangladesh (GUB) celebrated its 14th Founding Day on January 9, 2016 at its campus. The daylong foundation day event was entertained by a series of colourful activities. The celebration included a discussion meeting and a cultural programme in the campus premises. Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir presided over the discussion programmes. Md. Shahid Ullah, Treasurer and Director of Student Affairs delivered the welcome speech. Md. Mazharul Islam, Deputy Registrar and Dr. Jahannath Biswas, Associate Professor of Department of Textile Engineering recalled their experiences in GUB. Prof. Dr. Golam Ahmed Faruqui, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies and Prof. Dr. Md. Fayzur Rahman, Chairperson, EEE Department also delivered speeches.
Founded in 2003, GUB has rapidly established itself as a top-tier private university in Bangladesh. Present BOT Chairperson Mohammed Abdullah Al-Mamun has taken a number of initiatives for ensuring continuous and sustained improvement of the university. At the event, chairpersons of different departments, faculty members, officials and a large number of students were present.
Spring trimester begins at IUB
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised an orientation programme on January 14, 2016 at its permanent campus at Bashundhara, Dhaka for the newly admitted students of the Spring 2016 trimester.
Welcoming the new students Prof. M Omar Rahman, VC, depicted the distinctive nature of IUB education which places importance of professional education on the foundation of cross-disciplinary liberal arts curricula. He said IUB is going global and committed to research and global partnership. He assured the students that IUB would do everything to ensure that their dreams come true.
Prof. Sarwar Uddin Ahmed, Dean, School of Business; Prof Shahriar Khan, Dean, School of Engineering and Computer Science; Dr. Abdul Khaleque, Dean, School of Environmental Science and Management; Dr. Mahbub Alam, Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences also spoke to the newly admitted students. Brig. Gen (Retd.) Md Anwarul Islam briefly discussed on the rules and regulations of the university. The programme was conducted by Lima Choudhury, Deputy Director, Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Office of IUB.
Later the newly admitted students visited different schools, departments, library, cafeteria, etc. Apart from the students, parents, guardians, members of the faculty and management of IUB were present on the occasion.
Seminar on PhD scholarships in Australia at ULAB
University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Australian Academy of Business Leadership (AABL) jointly organised a seminar on "Capacity Building and Opportunity for PhD Scholarship in Australia" from January 15-16, 2016 at ULAB Campus.
Dr. Afzalur Rashid, Senior Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, was the trainer of the two-day long seminar. As there are many PhD scholarship opportunities in Australian universities, the seminar was focused on building the capacity of faculty members, motivating them to enrol in PhD programmes, and providing hands-on training in writing PhD proposals.
The faculty members of ULAB, BRAC University, State University of Bangladesh, East West University, Jagannath University, Royal University Dhaka, United International University, American International University of Bangladesh, Daffodil International University all participated in the seminar.
The seminar was inaugurated by the VC of ULAB, Prof. Imran Rahman. The seminar concluded on January 16 by handing over certificates to the participants. Prof. H M Jahirul Haque, Pro-VC of ULAB handed over the certificates and delivered his vote of thanks.
English Language Teacher Development workshop at UAP
A workshop on English Language Teacher Development of Providing Effective Feedback on Academic Writing was held at the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) on January 16, 2016. Dr. Sharmin Khan, Department of English Linguistics and Language Development, San Jose State University, California, USA facilitated the workshop.
Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, UAP inaugurated the workshop. The workshop was aimed at discussing feedback as the most powerful influence on improvement, knowledge and achievement. The participants in the workshop, coming from different universities in Bangladesh, were later divided into groups to suggest feedbacks of some given samples of students' writings. Student-to-student feedback can be more helpful if the students are trained to be consistent, using the same exemplars and rubrics.
Students and teachers from different institutions participated. Prof. Shawkat Hussain, Head, English Department, UAP and Tasneem Siraj Mahboob, Member, Board of Trustees were present.
