CIMA Business Quiz 2015 ends on a high note
The grand finale of 'CIMA Business Quiz 2015', organised by CIMA Bangladesh, was held on September 18, 2015 at St. Joseph Higher Secondary School in Dhaka. The competition aimed to ignite interest in business knowledge among the next generation of potential business leaders.
Around 300 students from more than 50 higher secondary academic institutions registered for the competition and only 6 participants made it to the final round. In the exciting battle of knowledge, Sadman Islam from Sunnydale School won the championship. Rashik Alam from BAF Shaheen College and Tamanna Mahzabin Moumita from Northwestern College achieved the position of 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively. The chief guest of the prize giving ceremony was Anisul Hoque, editor of Kishor Alo, and the special guest was Brother Robi Purification CSC, Principal of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School. Zareef Tamanna Matin, Country Manager of CIMA Bangladesh; M. Kabir Yaqub, Director of Pubali Bank Ltd. and other CIMA qualified members and affiliates were also present at the lively event. The winners and the 50 semi-finalists were awarded with attractive prize money and gift packs from CIMA Bangladesh. The participants also received gifts from Nestle Bangladesh Limited and Pepsi Bangladesh.
Esonance 2015: A Hub for Bright, Young Techies

Unlike the rest of Bangladesh, Friday morning was a full-throttle working day for IUT students. On September 11, 2015, 'ESONANCE 2015', a tech festival, was held at Islamic University of Technology (IUT) at its Gazipur campus. The event was organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of IUT. Around 500 participants from 36 institutions joined the event, and IUT participants gave them a warm welcome and tough competition.
'Robomania 2.0' was the main attraction for participants and visitors alike. 'Robomania 1.0' was mostly on line follower robot (LFR) but 2.0 was more innovative and challenging. 'Unmanned Rescue Mission' (URM) was the theme and participants had to build an autonomous robot (LFR) as well as a radio frequency controlled rough terrain operational robot which had to go through a challenging terrain, pick up an object, and then move it to a specified location. Team 'IUT Top Guns' took the crown of championship with a huge margin and with record points. Proud members were Saad Mohammad Abdullah (team leader), Akhyar Bakth, Irfan Ahmed, Maher Asef Anan, Shifatur Rahman, Intishar Nur, Mahmudul Hasan and Abdullah Al Noman. 'IUT Top Guns' received BDT 1 lakh in cash. 'SUST Trins' won the 1st runner-up position and 'The Last Epiphany' from IUT grabbed the 2nd runner-up position.
Energy is a hot topic for research and worldwide discussion. To make productive solution to unproductive wastage of energy and to find alternate energy sources, 'ESONANCE 2015' arranged a 'Project Showcasing' event with the motto "Save Energy, Save the World." Project 'Power Symbiosis' of team 'IUT Triumvirate' snatched the championship with a brilliant idea to generate electricity from anaerobic reaction of sludge and anaerobic bacteria and use that electricity to create an artificial greenhouse which is capable of hydroponics and can generate artificial ultraviolet ray. Zami (team leader), Ishraq, Nahian and Towfiq came up with this brilliant idea which won BDT 10,000.
'Investor pitch challenge' was an intriguing contest and Team 'Clueless Maestros' (Wasif, Zahid and Fahrial) From IUT became champions. 'Poster Presentation Contest' was also full of bright and innovative ideas and the poster about 'Hydro Power Generation' from IUT were triumphant.
Signal Processing Contest problems were given to the contestants four days prior to the contest and it was about 'Optical Character Recognition' (OCR), but only they had to recognise the fonts of given Bengali word. Mirza Fuad Adnan from IUT was crowned champion in this contest.
To test the capability of one's mind and brilliance, 'Rubik's Cube Armageddon' and 'Brain Teaser Contest' were held. National Champion Rivu retained his championship against a very close opponent Humayun. 'Brain Teaser' was won by Mynor Rashid Mahi from IUT.
The curtain fell with the roars of IUT students. Out of 7 events, 6 championships came home.
This wonderful event was the fruit of all the hard works of students, staff and faculties alike. A participant form AUST and also 1st runner-up of 'Project Showcasing', Shaila Sharmin, said, "All the organisers and people of IUT were very helpful throughout the day. It is a wonderful initiative indeed."
TLC of BRACU organises faculty orientation programme
As a part of the committed endeavour towards the promotion and enhancement of excellence in teaching and learning, the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) of BRAC University organised the 17th Faculty Orientation Programme on September 10, 2015 at the campus with 33 newly appointed faculty members. The programme commenced with opening remarks of Dr. Seuty Sabur, Director (in-charge), TLC who talked about the academic culture and curriculum at BRACU. It was followed by a session facilitated by Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, VC, where he enlightened the new faculty members on the missions of BRACU and also talked about his expectations from them. After that, Associate Professor Mohammad Rezaur Razzak, Acting Head of BRAC Business School, facilitated a session on teacher-student interaction. The proceeding of the programme continued with Beth Trudell, English Language Consultant, BRAC Institute of Languages, who conducted a session on "Critical Thinking Made Easy."
Moreover, Shadia Alam and Md. Mahfuzur Rahman of HRD provided an overview of HR and administrative policies. The VC also inaugurated the 'Pedagogy Portal', a web-based platform conspiring of teaching resources and a discussion forum for faculty members that will be developed by TLC during the current semester.
AIUB MPH workshop and seminar for nurses
The Department of Public Health of American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) successfully arranged a workshop and seminar for nurses on "Increasing Opportunities for Nurses in Public Health" on September 11, 2015. The programme comprised of a workshop followed by interactive sessions with the nurses and then a career oriented seminar and quiz competition. About 200 nurses attended this programme. AIUB thought of taking the chance to let the nurse community know more about their potentials and the opportunities they have in the career of nursing.
The daylong programme was inaugurated by chief guest, Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Abdul Majid Bhuiyan, Director (Hospital), Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), along with Prof. Dr. Charles Villanueva, Pro-VC, AIUB. The programme was addressed by Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim, Faculty Member, MPH, AIUB. Ugochi U. Irikannu, BSN, MS, Dr. PH Health and Medical Supervisor, Chevron Bangladesh conducted workshop as chief facilitator in the morning session. The participants then went through an interactive session, in various groups, on how to develop their careers.
Major (Retd.) Dalia Hossain RM, RN, MPH, B.Sc. in Nursing, Principal, Prime Bank Nursing Institute, spoke on "How to Develop Skills for Nurses". Then Bassema Karaki, RN, BSN California Registered Nurse School Nurse, American International School Dhaka (AISD), gave a speech on "MPH in building up a good nursing career" following which the participants attended a quiz competition and a networking session.
At the closing ceremony, chief guest Brig. Gen. Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Director, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH); special guest Dr. Mohammad Sadiqur Rahman, Director, Central Police Hospital, Dhaka and Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, gave vote of thanks and prizes among the winners of different competitions. Director (Student Affairs), Director (Public Relations), faculty members, officials, students of AIUB and representatives of the participating organisations were also present at the seminar. The closing and prize distribution programme was conducted by Dr. Md. Aurangzeb, Coordinator (MPH Program) and MPH@AIUB team.
