Game Dev Story
Platforms: iOS, Android
Game Dev Story is a simple tycoon game on Android and iOS. You play as a video game developer and you make games. You get money from your successes and go bankrupt from your failures.
It's quite easy to get hooked to the game. The concept is brilliant, and the free version has minimal ads. The downside of the free version is that you can only play for 15 years in game time, which is as far as you need to go before it bores you. The chiptune soundtrack goes well with the game but it's not anything special.
You research game genres and buy licenses for consoles. You keep making games until you hire an employee who can make you your own console. Your goal is to outsell the competition and dominate the market share. Sounds fun? Well the things YOU can do are limited.
The game would've worked better if it were incremental.
The game feels a bit too easy, at times. It's hard going bankrupt and you always somehow spring back up. Even if your genre matching was horrible and critic reviews panned the game, it still sells a lot without advertising. While the save function was a nice addition, it made the game easy.
It's a good game, though. It lets you live your dreams, if your dreams are making games by not actually making any games. It fulfills its role of being an app you can have a lot of fun with and then later discard after playing. If you are interested in this game, try out Game Dev Tycoon which is basically a clone on PC.
