Shibir man shot in clash with Dhaka cops
An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, was shot during a clash with policemen in Dhaka today during BNP-led 20-party’s hartal.

The clash ensued after police chased at a flash procession of the Shibir supporters near Japan market of Kadamtali area around 8:00am, witnesses said.
One Abdul Hamid, 22, a Shibir activist of Dhaka College unit, was shot on both legs after police opened gunfire on the spot. The man is attending treatments at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Kadamtali Police Station, said that police opened live gunfire to disperse the agitating Shibir activists to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile in continuation of the combing operation through the capital, 21 more activists of BNP, Jamaat and the Shibir were held in the past 24 hours, a media note from Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters said today.
Today is the third day of a 72-hour nationwide hartal spell of the BNP-led 20-party alliance on top of its prevailing blockade which entered 29th day this morning.
The death toll in political violence climbed to 46 with the arson on a bus in Comilla early today. A majority of the victims dead so far were innocents without reported ties to politics.
In Dhaka, a bus of the Proceshta Paribahan service was set on fire in Malibagh Chwodhurypara area around 7:10am, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters said.
Three people were arrested in possession of 12 crude bombs from Baunia Beri Badh area of Mirpur area last midnight, Zia-uz-Zaman, officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station said.
The detained were identified as Islmail, a bus driver of Safety Paribahan service, and two helpers Swapan and Hridoy. Police said to have opened fire on Ismail while he was trying to flee. He was later taken to DMCH.
Traffic in Dhaka was shallower than usual in the morning, but picked up as day grew. Public buses of all routes were seen plying along with many private cars.
Police were seen deployed through all major points in the city securing a watchful eye to avert any untoward incident. Elite force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) troops were patrolling streets.
In Gazipur, a covered van was torched in Kaliganj upazila and another Dhaka Paribahan bus set on fire in the city, our correspondent reports quoting local police.
The covered van was set on fire around 5:45am, said Mustafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station. However, no one was injured in the arson.
The parked Dhaka Paribahan bus was torched in Shibbari area around 6:00am, said Khandakar Rezaual Hasan Reza, OC of Gazipur Sadar Police Station. No one was injured.
