Severe cold, dense fog affect boro saplings
Boro saplings in many areas of the district are becoming 'whitish and yellowish' due to severe cold and dense fog, said farmers.
Mansur Ali, a farmer at Kulaghat village in Sadar upazila said, "My 18-day old paddy saplings have become yellow in the last few days of severe cold and fog. It would be a big blow to us if our saplings are damaged totally."
Mafizul Islam, another farmer at the same village said young saplings in many fields of the village turned whitish for lack of adequate sunlight.
"I have cultivated boro saplings on 12 decimal of land. Of them, saplings on about 5 decimal became yellowish. If my saplings are totally damaged, I will not be able to cultivate the paddy this year," he said.
Hatibandha upazila's Sindurna UP chairman Khatib Uddin said, the boro farmers in his union were worried as dense fog turned their saplings yellowish.
Farmer Nimai Chandra Sen at Dighaltari village of Aditmari upazila echoed similar problems.
"I bought boro seeds at high price and prepared the seedbeds but they would be damaged if this weather continued," he said.
Farmers started preparing the seedbeds from mid-November. If the temperature rises and fog goes within a short time, boro cultivation would not be much affected, DAE officials said.
Deputy Director, DAE, Safayet Hossain said, field level officials have been asked to tell the farmers to cover the seedbeds with polythene to save them from cold and fog.
