Seven fishermen hit by bullets as robbers open fire

8 others abducted in Meghna

At least seven fishermen were bullet-hit by robbers while eight others abducted along with their trawler in Meghna River at Danbair Char point of Jahajmara union under Hatiya upazila yesterday morning.

The bullet injured fishermen are Afsar Uddin, Mohiuddin, Nurul Islam, Nur Alam, Hannan, Faruk Uddin and Md. Shamim. They were admitted to Hatiya Upazila Health Complex.

The robbers abducted Emal Uddin, Nur Uddin and Taslim Uddin and five unidentified others.

The injured fishermen said, a group of about 25 of them went to the Meghna river by three fishing trawlers -- named FB Jharna, FB Mayer Dowa 2 and FB Jahid Hasan -- from Jahajmara Ghat at 4:30am yesterday.

Around 1:00pm, while they were returning after catching fish, a gang swooped on them and started firing at Dhanbair Char point of the  river near Nijhum Dwip.

Many fishermen jumped into the river while robbers took away FB Mayer Dowa trawler and its eight fishermen.

Hearing screams, other fishing trawlers rushed to the spot and rescued them.

Sayed Md. Fazleh Rabbi, officer in charge of Hatiya Police Station, quoting the injured fishermen, said he had heard about the incident but nobody came to lodge any complaint.
