Selim warns his men against wrongdoing
A day after Selim Osman won the Narayanganj-5 by-election marked by allegations of fake votes, use of black money and intimidation of voters, the newly elected JP MP yesterday warned his followers against doing anything unlawful.
“Nobody involved in extortion and criminal activities, creating disorder, and any evil deeds will be spared,” said Selim.
“Punishment would be double for those getting engaged in unlawful activities remaining on my side,” he added.
Selim made the statement while addressing a rally of Jatiya Party activists gathered at the party's Narayanganj office on Friday afternoon.
“Don't assume that I belong to any individual or a group of people. Listen carefully what I am going to say now that I represent all people of Narayanganj-5 irrespective of their political beliefs,” Selim said.
“The responsibility to serve the people is divided evenly for those who did vote for me and who did not…
“I will value matters by what is legal and what is not. This is my neutrality.”
Selim also placed wreaths at the martyrs' memorial and the grave of his elder brother Nasim Osman, the former JP MP from Narayanganj-5 constituency, who passed away last month.
The rally was attended by activists and leaders from JP and the ruling Awami League alike.
Instead of assuring the people, the post-election speech by the MP apparently came to them as crocodile's tears, as the name of Osman family comes up in almost all criminal activities taken place in the port city.
The seven murders that rocked the country lately brought under spotlight the name of Shamim Osman, the youngest among the Osman brothers. With five rival ruling party activists killed in the incident, Shamim is said to have reaped the largest benefit out of the murders.
Even involvement of special crime busting police unit Rapid Action Battalion officers, who enjoyed widespread impunity for extrajudicial killings, in the murders came to light.
But Shamim was not even quizzed in connection with the murders despite repeated demands from the victims' families.
