Section 144 imposed in Kurigram after deadly clash
District administration this afternoon has imposed section 144 in Kurigram Sadar upazila following a deadly clash between two villagers that left over 100 injured and 50 houses torched.
Additional District Magistrate Md Imtiaz Hossain declared the embargo on gathering this afternoon saying it will continue till normalcy returns, reports our Kurigram correspondent.
Earlier, more than 100 people were injured and 50 houses torched during a clash between the residents of two villages in the upazila this morning.
Among the injured, two were whisked off to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital while 17 others to Kurigram Sadar Hospital, report our Kurigram correspondent.
Police detained at least 50 people from the spot, Mohammad Shahab Uddin, additional superintendent of police in Kurigram told The Daily Star.
The clash ensued between the residents of Akotapara and Sandarpara villages at about 9:00am, he said.
The villagers locked into a clash when Ratan, 21, of Shandarpara went to the shop of Robi Das at Akotapara to air up his football but he did not pay for it, locals said.
Both the groups were equipped with sharp weapons during the clash that left at least 100 people injured, Shahbuddin added.
Around 50 houses and several shops of Sandarpar were set on fire, Sirajul Islam, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, told The Daily Star.
On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and put out the blaze, Sirajul said.
Additional police forces have been deployed at the villagers to avert any untoward incident, Sirajul said.
