SC okays Asif’s bail
The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court verdict that granted bail to Asif Adnan Shuvo, who was allegedly recruited as an Islamic State fighter, in a criminal case, clearing the way for his release from jail.
The 26-year-old son of former High Court judge Abdus Salam Mamun has been accused in the case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 for “conspiring to commit terrorist and militant activities”.
Shuvo was arrested from his Segunbagicha residence in Dhaka on September 24. That day the son of a senior bureaucrat, Fazle Elahi Tanzil, 24, was also arrested from the government quarters at Eskaton.
Shahbagh Police filed the case the same day against them for their involvement in militant and terrorist activities.
At today’s hearing, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC, passed “no order” on a petition filed by the government seeking stay on the HC verdict that granted bail to Asif.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star that the HC verdict will remain in force and therefore Asif will get released from jail in this case.
On December 23, the HC granted permanent bail to Asif after hearing a petition filed by him seeking bail in the case.
The government recently filed a petition with the SC against the HC verdict.
