SC extends its stay order on bail of Toki murder accused
The Supreme Court today extended its earlier order that stayed the bail of an accused of Tanvir Mohammad Toki murder case.
The High Court on June 24 granted ad-interim bail to Saleh Rahman alias Simanta for six months and issued a rule upon the government to explain why the accused should not be granted regular bail in the sensational killing case.
The chamber judge of the SC on July 1 stayed the HC order for two weeks following another stay petition filed by the government.
Now the stay order will continue till disposal of the HC rule, Deputy Attorney General Md Suhrawardy told The Daily Star today.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain passed the order following a government petition seeking a stay on the HC’s bail order.
Simanta is son of Bazlur Rahman alias Hazi Ripon, who is a Jatiya Party leader of Chasara in Narayanganj.
Toki, an A-level graduate and son of former president of Narayanganj Sangskritik Jote Rafiur Rabbi, was found dead on the bank of the Shitalakkhya on March 8 last year, two days after he went missing.
On March 20 the same year, Rafiur lodged the murder case against seven people, including Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman and his son Ayon Osman.
