SC cancels bail of Fakhrul, 4 others
The Supreme Court today cancelled a High Court order that had granted anticipatory bail to five BNP leaders including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in four separate cases.
The five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Mozzammel Hossain passed the order after disposing of five separate appeals filed by the government against the HC order.
The four other BNP leaders are: Mirza Abbas, Amanullah Aman, Abdus Salam, and Obaidul Haque Nasir.
Following the SC order, the accused BNP leaders will now have to surrender before a trial court, Deputy Attorney General Md Suhrawardy told The Daily Star.
The trial court will decide whether it would grant them bail in the cases, he said.
On January 20, the HC granted them anticipatory bail four eight weeks in the cases filed with Ramna and Shahbagh police stations.
One of the cases was filed in connection with an arson attack on a police requisitioned bus at Bangla Motor that left a policeman killed on December 25 last year.
The other case was filed for another arson attack near Matsya Bhaban at Shahbagh in the capital in November, 2013.
Those attacks left several people dead and some others injured.
