Saber elected Inter-Parliamentary Union president
Awami League lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury has been elected president of the Intra-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the next three years.
Saber bagged 169 votes while his nearest candidate Bronwyn Bishop, Speaker of Australian parliament, polled 95 votes, a Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat said today.
The election was held today, the concluding day of the five-day 131st council of the IPU in Geneva.

The international organisation of parliaments, which was established in 1889, is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
Meanwhile, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah and Chief Whip ASM Feroz congratulated the lawmaker on his being elected the president of the global body.
