Saarc motor vehicle, railways deals to be finalised in 3 months: Minister
Transport ministers of the Saarc nations will sit and finalise Motor Vehicles Agreement and Regional Railways Agreement within three months, Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said today.
“They (Saarc leaders) have reached in a consensus to hold a meeting in three months for finalising the agreement,” the minister said this at a press briefing at his ministry about the outcome of the recent 18th Saarc Summit.
The agreements were supposed to be signed during the two-day Saarc summit held in Kathmandu from November 27.
Bangladesh and India were ready to ink the agreements. But none of those was signed due to differences of opinion among some member countries, particularly Pakistan, turning this summit a non-achiever like the previous ones.
The foreign minister further said the leaders, during the summit, stressed the need for intra-regional connectivity for the socio-economic development, peace and stability in South Asia.
“The leaders also emphasised to take necessary steps on security to tackle the militancy in the region,” Mahmood Ali said adding that Bangladesh played its due role in the summit.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bangladesh once the Teesta water-sharing deal is finalised, the minister said.
