RU students open school for street kids
Over 100 philanthropic students of Rajshahi University have established a school named "Shiksha Niketan" on the campus for street children.
The school started its journey with 30 street children on Monday in a room in an RU staff quater. RU Student Adviser Prof Sadekul Arefin Matin inaugurated the school.
The classes will remain open six days a week, except for Fridays, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
All the expenses are being carried out by the students. The university authorities have contributed to the initiative by giving the room for free.
Md Abu Horaira, a key organiser of Nobo Jagoron Foundation that has been formed to fulfil the initiative, said "I got the inspiration from a seven-year-old street boy on the campus who was so keen to study but his poor family could not afford it."
The organisers had to go from door to door to convince the poor parents to send their kids to the school, said the organisers.
"It was difficult to convince some families, as they wanted to keep their children in begging rather than sending them to schools," said Horaira.
Of the students, Anu and Devi, who want to be doctors, and Sathi, who dreams to be a judge, said they were so happy to get the opportunity for study.
