RU Shibir leader, Jessore Jamaat man killed in encounters
An activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami and a leader of its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir of the Rajshahi University unit were killed in separate encounters with police today.
Shahabuddin Mufid, information secretary of the RU Shibir unit, was killed when police opened live gunfire on crude bomb-wielding Shibir men in Rajshahi city this morning.
The campus unit of Shibir called for a 48-hour hartal from Sunday in Rajshahi division protesting the killing, a press statement issued later in the day said.
Shibir activists blasted crude bombs on patrol police in Shamsadipur area near the university around 8:00am, said Nahidul Islam, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
Police were “compelled to fire back” leaving Mufid dead on the spot.
Two others, RU Habibur Rahman Hall unit Shibir President, Habibur Rahman, and activist Mufijur Rahman, were injured at the spot.
The two injured Shibir activists were undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The dead body was taken there for autopsy.
Police constable Mahbubur Rahman, body guard of RMP DC Nahidul Islam, also sustained injuries during the encounter. He was taken at Police Line Hospital for treatment.
Around 3:00pm, a press release was issued declaring the hartal call which will begin from 6:00am on Sunday and observed across the division for 48 hours.
JAMAAT MAN KILLED IN JESSORE ‘GUNFIGHT’
Jamaat activist Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Nur Ali from Satkhira, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Jessore Sadar upazila around 2:15am today, reports Unb.
Police tried to stop a microbus of a gang of criminals at Picnic Corner of Ramnagar area, said Enamul Haque, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
Defying the police signal, the criminals opened fire at the policemen. The law enforcers to fire back, trigging a “gunfight,” the police official said.
Shahidul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, he said. However, none other of his cohorts could be caught “because they managed to flee the scene.”
Police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue.
