Rony's Dhaka extend lead
Reigning champions Dhaka extended their lead at the top by 19 points at the end of the third round of the National Cricket League yesterday after they eased to an expected innings victory over Chittagong at BKSP yesterday.
At the moment Dhaka are at the top of the table with 75 points, followed by Rangpur, who managed to bowl Khulna out on the fourth day to notch their second win and push Abdur Razzak's side to third place.
Boosted by a mammoth first innings score, Dhaka cruised to victory by an innings and 174 runs. With Chittagong reaching the stumps on Day Three at 245 for 6, more than 200 runs behind Dhaka's first innings score, it was only a matter of time before they crumbled. And that's exactly what happened as the cricketers from the port city were bowled out for 287. Rony Talukdar, for his double-century, received the player-of-the-match award.
Rangpur secured the only other win of the round as they successfully managed to bowl out Khulna for just 163 at Mirpur on the last fourth day. Former under-19 captain Mahmudul Hasan was the chief-wrecker as his turners scalped four important wickets. Earlier, Rangpur had declared on 259 for 8 in their second innings.
Ground number two at the BKSP turned out to be a batsman's paradise as the match between Rajshahi and Sylhet ended in a draw. Rajshahi, following their first innings total of 482, failed to capitalise. Sylhet were earlier asked to follow on after scoring 324 in their first innings. However, they put up a strong show in the second, 335 for 3, to ensure a draw.
A fighting spirit from Barisal in their second innings ensured a draw for them against Dhaka Metro at Fatullah.
