Robbers kill sand trader, stab cop
A sand trader was shot dead and three others were injured in an attack by a group of robbers in Bhuapur upazila on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Kuddus, 28, of Char Bihari village.
Mohammad Moniruzzaman, chairman of Gabsara union parishad, said a group of sand traders of Char Bihari village went to Rehai Chanduni area for lifting sand from Jamuna River at 6:00am.
A robber gang, led by local notorious river robber Kuddus Mondol, went to the spot and demanded illegal toll from the sand lifters.
When they refused to give toll, the robbers sprayed bullets on the sand lifters and also stabbed them with sharp weapons, leaving sand trader Kuddus dead on the spot and three others injured.
Of the injured, two were admitted to Bhuapur Upazila Health Complex and the other was referred to Tangail Medical College Hospital.
In Rajbari district, robbers indiscriminately stabbed an on duty highway police sub-inspector at Durgapur in Kalukhali upazila early Wednesday, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
The police official was identified as Dulal Mia, 45, posted at Gandimara highway in the district.
Zaman Shikdar, in-charge of Gandimara highway police, told this correspondent that a police team, led by Dulal Mia, rushed to Durgapur on a tip-off that a gang was preparing of commit robbery by felling roadside trees on Kushtia-Rajbari highway around 2:30am.
The robbers attacked Dulal Mia from a hideout when he along with his forces was looking for the robbers. The also stabbed Dulal and hurriedly disappeared from the spot.
Dulal was rushed to Rajbari Sadar Hospital and then sifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. His right hand, back and other parts of the body were seriously injured.
However, he is now out of danger, doctors at the hospital said.
