‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Satkhira cops
A suspected robber was killed during a “gunfight” between his cohorts and police in Tala upazila of Satkhira early today.
Deceased Rafiqul Islam, 38, was a member of an inter-district robber gang, reports our Satkhira correspondent.
Rafiqul, an accused in 10 cases, was detained yesterday in connection with the robbery at a house at Kashemkhlola village, said Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Patkelghata Police Station.
In primary interrogation, Rafiqul confessed to his involvement with the robbery and also informed police about his cohorts who possess firearms.
Based on his information, a team of police went to Obhaytola around 3:30am to arrest Rafiqul’s cohorts. Sensing their presence, the associates opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to fire back that triggered a 20-minute “gunfight”.
Rafiqul was injured with the bullets fired by his cohort while his cohorts managed to flee the scene, the OC claimed.
Doctors pronounced him dead when he was rushed to Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said Alamgir Kabir, a physician of the hospital.
Victim’s father Babor Ali said police detained his son in front of their house at Noakathi village. He heard about his son’s death in the morning.
Police recovered a shutter-gun and a sharp weapon from the scene.
Two constables also suffered minor injuries during the “gun battle”.
