Road mishaps kill 14 in Tangail, Naogaon
At least 14 people died and 10 were critically injured today in two separate road mishaps, raising the death toll on roads and highways to 22 in the last 24 hours.
In Tangail, ten, including a woman and a minor girl, were killed and four others injured when a truck rammed a three-wheeler human hauler in Madhabpur upazila around 12:15pm.
The dead were: Salma Begum, 30, her sons Sadiqul, 10, and Samiul, 8, and Rohima Begum, 30, Habibur Rahman, 50, Firoza Begum, 45, her grandson Sajid, 4, driver Abdul Kader, 60, from Madhupur upazila, and Hena Akter, 35, from Ghatail upazila.
Identity of one other dead, endorsed by the police, could not be ascertained.
The incident took place on the Tangail-Mymensingh Road in Asura area, our Tangail correspondent reports quoting Mozibor Rahman, officer-in-charge of Madhupur Police Station.
The dead were all passengers of the three-wheeler, the OC said. The truck was seized but its driver fled. The injured were being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
In Naogaon, at least four including a girl were killed when a Rajshahi-bound truck hit a rickshaw-van at Hapania area on Naogaon-Rajshahi road at its Sadar upazila around 11:30am.
The dead were Abdus Sattar, 40, from Manda upazila, his daughter, Khusi, 8, Mohammad Sohel, 18, from Sadar and a rickshaw-van puller Saim Uddin, 30, from Mohadevpur upazila.
All the four victims died on the spot at Hapania area, reports our Naogaon correspondent quoting Mohammad Abbas Uddin, a sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.
Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Naogaon Sadar hospital for autopsy. The truck was seized and its driver arrested from Mohadevpur upazila.
Yesterday evening, at least nine people were killed, including two women and a child, and 35 others injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi.
