The government has decided to upgrade Rajshahi and Chittagong medical colleges to medical universities, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said today.
While disclosing the decision, the minister expressed hope that the universities would contribute significantly to improve health services in the country.
The announcement came at a programme titled “Felicitation Ceremony of Print and Electronic Media Personnel” organised by the Directorate General of Health Services at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Addressing the event, Nasim said, “We are forming an advisory committee for the health ministry that will include journalists and other stakeholders.”
Another committee headed by the additional secretary to the health ministry is being formed to examine the equipment purchase records of government hospitals in recent years, he added.
“We will identify and take action against those who were involved in the purchase of expensive equipment that is proved to be useless,” said the minister.
He also reiterated his determination to fight absenteeism among doctors posted in rural areas.
