Religious extremists killed Faruqi in planned way
The family of slain Sheikh Nurul Islam Faruqi at a press conference said they suspect that religious extremists had killed him in a planned manner.
Sheikh Faruqi's son Ahmad Reza Faruqi said this in a written statement at their Rajabazar residence in the capital yesterday.
Criminals slit the throat of Faruqi, also a presidium member of the Islamic Front Bangladesh and a presenter of Islamic programmes in two private television channels, at his house on August 27.
Reza said his younger brother Faisal Faruqi had filed a case of murder and robbery after the incident when he and another brother were abroad.
He, however, said the killers came to their house with a well planned way to kill his father not committing a robbery in the house.
The Faruqi's family members demanded proper investigation, arrest of the killers and exemplary punishment for them.
Refuting media reports that Faruqi, chief imam of the Supreme Court Jame Masjid, was killed following "family feuds and business related conflicts," Reza said his father had no family feud and even no business conflict with anybody.
Faruqi's son said his father was an Alem (Islamic scholar) and a believer in Sunni stream of Islam and all along his life he had spoke for the holy Quran and Sunnah.
Reza said his father was also a believer in "Shariat and Sufism", and added that various vested quarters had been threatening to kill his father for this reason. They even had threatened him in facebook to kill him.
Replying to journalists' query about the progress in the investigation into the murder, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the detective branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said no substantial information could be gleaned from the three suspects arrested in the case.
All four divisions of DB have been engaged in the investigation into the killing and in arresting the persons involved in it.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday told the parliament that the government would soon be able to unearth the reason behind the killing of Faruki.
Besides, they will soon reveal the real motive behind the triple murder at the capital's Moghbazar on August 28 and their efforts is going on to ascertain the reason responsible for the death of a couple in Banani on Monday, he said.
