'Rekhar Nachon' held in port city
The agony and ecstasy of riverine people came to the fore at a five-day art exhibition titled “Rekhar Nachon” by renowned artiste Monsur ul Karim. The event was held recently at the Mrinmoy Art Gallery of South Khulshi in the port city.
Art connoisseurs, students and teachers of fine arts, eminent personalities of the city and visitors raptly viewed the 34 fabulous works created through line drawing and drypoint by the Ekushey Padak-holding artiste.
Karim's work from the '80s and '90s were on display at the exhibition, side by side with his contemporary drypoint works of 2014.
“Every painting or drawing of an artist is nothing but a combination of different types of lines. If anybody wants to be an artist, he or she must start with lines. When an artiste creates an eye catching human figure, a wave of an ocean or scenic beauty of a place on a canvas by strokes of a brush then the lines determines their structures,” said Karim.
Different kinds of lines like straight and curves mingle with one another, creating rhythms and synchronisation and that is why the exhibition is named “Rekhar Nachon” (Dance of Lines), explained the artist.
Born in Rajbari on the banks of river Padma, the Chittagong-based artist -- has won many awards at home and abroad for his contribution to the fine arts -- is a Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts of Chittagong University. This was his 17th solo art exhibition.
“Riverine people and their lives are my inspiration as an artist as I also grew up on the banks of river Padma. That deep connection is reflected in my works at the exhibition,” said Karim.
Comparing his earlier and present line works, the artist said that in his previous line works, the shapes of the figures were geometric which gradually took on organic forms.
Extending his appreciation of his student Sameena M Karim, also the proprietor of Mrinmoy for helping organise the exhibition in the art gallery, Karim said that after the mid-'90s, no exhibition of the artist was held in the port city.
Editor of local daily newspaper Purbokone, architect Taslim Uddin Chowdhury was present as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition. Ustad Captain Azizul Islam, cultural personality Alam Khorshed, former director of Institute of Fine Arts of CU Md Jasim Uddin and renownded photographer Maududul Alam were also present, among others.
