Rein in ‘goons’ or face similar attacks, Hanif tells BNP
Condemning yesterday’s attack on Netrakona lawmaker Chhabi Biswas, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif today warned that BNP leaders would face similar attacks if they failed to rein in their “goons”.
“There are many people in the country and they may carry out attacks on your vehicles. You may also face such attacks,” Hanif said addressing BNP leaders.
“We demand severe punishment to those involved in the attack,” Hanif said while talking to reporters after a meeting at the party chief's Dhanmondi office in Dhaka.
Hanif’s comments came a day after Biswas, elected from Netrokana-1, was hit in the head and left ear with sticks by the rowdy activists of BNP and its student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, in front of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
“He (Biswas) is a war hero and an honest man also. But BNP’s goons attacked him and vandalised his vehicle,” Hanif said.
“Yesterday, the goons’ aim was to carry out atrocities across the capital,” he added.
Biswas came under the attack when the activists of pro-AL student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were clashing with BNP and JCD men as the latters were gathering in Bakshibazar and its surrounding areas ahead of Khaleda's appearance before a court in Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.
CASE
Shahbagh police filed a case accusing 23 identified and 50 to 60 unknown activists of BNP and JCD on charges of attempting to kill Biswas and torching his vehicle.
JCD President Rajib Ahsan has been made prime accused in the case, said Md Habil Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Shahbagh Police Station.
Meanwhile, police sued a total of 76 leaders and activists of BNP and JCD including Ahsan, general secretary Akramul Hasan and former president Azizul Bari Helal for the Bakshibazar clash.
