Reckless driving caused deadly Natore crash
Reckless driving and overtaking were the main cause of the Natore crash that claimed 36 lives in one of the country's deadliest crashes in recent history, as reported by the probe panel.
The probe report found both bus companies guilty of having no certificate and route permit to ply their vehicles on the highways, reports our Natore correspondent.
Additional District Magistrate Khandakar Mohammad Ali, who was head of the three-member probe body ordered for probe by the government, submitted their report tonight.
Natore Deputy Commissioner Mushiur Rahman received the report around 9:00pm.
The crash was caused by a head-on collision between a Rajshahi-bound Keya Paribahan bus and a Gurudaspur-bound Othoi Paribahan local bus on the Bonpara-Hatikamrul highway.
"The Othoi Paribahan bus did not have any legal papers or a fitness certificate," ADM Khandakar Mohammad said. "The fitness certificate of the Keya Paribahan bus expired two years ago."
The report suggested 17-point recommendation to reduce road crashes on the route including raising public awareness against reckless driving.
Earlier today, the death toll in the crash was raised to 36, from the previous 33, for what the Natore deputy commissioner said "mistake in counting."
The DC said the probe report will be submitted to the concerned ministry as soon as it reached him.
The families of the victims will be handed over the government's pledged compensation, Tk 1 lakh for each family, within a day or two, according to the DC.
