Rapist of minor girl arrested
Police yesterday arrested a sexagenarian from Boro Derahar village in Nandigram upazila of Bogra on the charge of raping a six-year-old girl twice.
"We arrested Ahmad Ali, 62, after a case was filed in connection with the rape on Tuesday," said Akibul Islam, sub-inspector of Nandigram Police Station.
According to the case statement, Ahmad raped the girl and forced the victim's family to leave home quietly through village arbitration. The incident happened in the first week of February.
In the so-called arbitration in that month, the accused was only asked to give the victim a compensation of Tk 30,000.
On Thursday, the High Court ordered the government to inform it by April 20 about the steps taken against the rape and forcible eviction of the victim's family through arbitration.
The court came up with the order on a suo moto motion following a report published in The Daily Star the same day. At the village arbitration, the arbitrators said the girl had been tainted and should not be allowed to live at her home in Boro Derahar village, the report said.
Mamun Master, Abdul Gafur and Ansar Ali were among the arbitrators. They are on good terms with the influential Ahmad, a neighbour of the victim.
The girl had to move to her aunt's house at Telihara village of Sadar upazila. She got only Tk 5,000 in compensation from the accused.
On information from a villager and a local journalist, Sharmin Sultana Shumi, women affairs officer in the upazila, took the victim under government care and helped the family file a case on Tuesday.
