Raipur cop ‘didn’t shoot himself, he was killed’
The policeman who was primarily suspected to have mistakenly turned his gun on himself in Raipur upazila of Laxmipur early today might have been murdered.
The bullets found in his body were not fired from his gun, said Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, superintendent of Laxmipur police.
“He might have been murdered,” he told our Noakhali correspondent.
A body has been formed to investigate the incident, said the police official adding that the panel will have to submit its report by a week.
Earlier, local police said Abdul Jalil, 45, assistant sub-inspector of Raipur Police Station, shot himself dead near the police station around 1:00am.
“ASI Jalil was stationed at the Palli Bidyut office in Faridganj area last night,” said Manjurul Islam Akand, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station. “Locals had besieged the office demanding electricity.”
Jalil was shot while he was taking tea, after completing his duties, at a tea stall near the police station, the OC said. “The bullet pierced his chest.”
His compatriots rushed him to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. An autopsy was performed on the body this afternoon.
After the autopsy, it was found out that Jalil was hit by shotgun rounds, SP Shafiur Rahman said. “Jalil was carrying an SMG (small machine gun).”
“We primarily thought that Jalil mistakenly shot himself with his own gun. But now, since the bullets don’t match, we think it might have been a murder.”
A three-member probe panel has been formed with Additional SP Maruf Hossain as its head to investigate the incident, the SP said.
However, the official could not specify a reason for the “killing.”
Deceased Abdul Jalil is a son of late Ayub Ali from Begumganj upazila of Noakhali.
