Rab warned against HR violation
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Mizanur Rahman today warned Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) against violation of any human rights, asking the elite force to be respectful to the country's laws.
"Be careful, Rab. Everybody must obey and respect laws," the NHRC boss said at a discussion at Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
The goodwill of Rab has been entirely destroyed due to its recent activities, he noted.
The NHRC and India-based Commonwealth Human Rights Initiatives jointly organised the discussion titled 'Accountability of Police'.
Talking on the abduction and killing of nine persons including Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam, Rahman raised question how the killers managed to flee the country if they were under the surveillance by the government.
Rab drew flaks from different quarters following their controversial role in different criminal activists, particularly in the killings of seven people in Narayanganj last month.
On April 27, Nazrul Islam and his three aides -- Tajul, Liton, and Swapan -- and Nazrul's driver Jahangir and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver Ibrahim were kidnapped separately. Later, their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya.
Three Rab officers were sent on forced retirements after Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, has blamed some Rab men for killed him in exchange of Tk 6 crore from Awami League leader Nur Hossain and a few others.
The trio was arrested from cantonment on May 17 and 18.
