Rab ADG questioned over 7-murder
A government-formed committee today recorded the statement of Col Ziaul Ahsan, additional director general of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), to find out facts behind seven murders in Narayanganj.
Additional Secretary to Public Administration Ministry Shahjahan Ali Mollah, who heads the probe body, said: "We have recorded the statement of Ziaul Ahsan as he is the head of operation of the elite force.”
“We will take necessary steps on the basis of the statement," Mollah said adding that the fact-finding body has so far recorded statements of at least 350 people over the incident, reports the Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Speaking to reporters at his Bangladesh Secretariat office, Mollah said Col Zia talked to the members of the probe body from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
The Rab official later told reporters that, "I have given all information sought by the probe body members."
Earlier, three former officers of Rapid Action Battalion -- Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana -- were quizzed by the government-formed probe body for their alleged involvement in the Narayanganj seven murders.
The three were sent to forced retirement on May 6 after their alleged involvement with the abduction and killing of the seven people came to light.
On April 27, Narayanganj city mayor Nazrul Islam and his four aides and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver were kidnapped from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road around the same time in broad daylight.
Six bodies, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river on April 30 and another was found the following day.
The other victims are Swapan, Tajul Islam, Liton, Jahangir and Ibrahim.
The government formed the seven-member probe committee to investigate the abduction and killings in line with a High Court order.
