Prothom Alo editor gets bail in Jhalakathi case
Bangla daily Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman was granted bail today and excused from appearing for hearings in a Jhalakathi case filed over religious incitement.
Matiur Rahman appeared before the court around 11:00am this morning, following an arrest warrant issued against him for failure to appear upon multiple summonses, and attended the hearing sessions of today, our Jhalakathi correspondent reports.
District’s senior chief judicial magistrate Md Arifuzzaman granted him bail until resolution of the case and excused him from personal appearance during hearing until further notice.
The court set the next hearing in this case, filed over alleged religious incitement by the daily for publishing a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), for February 22.
On Wednesday last week, the district’s senior chief judicial magistrate Md Arifuzzaman issued the arrest warrant against the editor and the daily’s photojournalist Majid Khan after they failed to appear before the court on multiple summonses.
Plaintiff Bani Amin Bakshai, a member of Jhalakathi district bar association, alleged that the daily incited religious sentiments by publishing the cartoon in an issue of the daily’s satire supplementary Alpin in 2007.
