Protesters attacked
At least six activists of several left-leaning bodies suffered minor injuries in an attack allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men while the former were protesting against a newly launched evening programme in the political science department of Dhaka University yesterday.
The left activists later brought out a procession on the campus, demanding punishment for the attackers, who, according to them, were activists of the BCL.
DU's left students have been protesting against the two-year evening master's programme, under which a total of 60 students can enroll for Tk 90,000 each, calling it "commercialisation of education".
As part of their scheduled protest, they locked the two main doors of the Arts Building to enforce a strike yesterday. But when, around 9:30am, the backdoor was opened and students arrived there to sit for exams, the protesters resisted them, leading to a scuffle.
The protesters said one of the attackers BCL's Hajji Mohammad Mohsin Hall unit general secretary Mehedi Hasan. Acting Proctor Prof Amzad Ali, however, said they were general students. DU unit BCL President Mehedi Hasan Mollah also denied the allegation.
