Prosecution happy with Qaisar’s verdict
The prosecution team voiced pleasure with the death sentence handed to former Jatiya Party minister Syed Mohammad Qaisar by a war crimes tribunal.
Qaisar, 73, was handed death for seven charges of killing and rape and life in prison for four charges conducted during the Liberation War of Bangladesh during 1971.
Emerging from the tribunal after the verdict announcement, Prosecutor Rana Dasgupta, a senior lawyer, said his team was happy with the judgement of ICT-2.
“Qaisar developed his own force Qaisar Bahini during 1971 war that carried out a horrific situation in Brahmanbaria and Habiganj,” he said.
“Since they could not be proved to have been operating under the Pakistan army, the tribunal said we cannot consider them as auxiliary forces,” Dasgupta added.
The charges Qaisar found guilty of were proved beyond doubt. However, he was acquitted in two charges and it could not be cleared whether the prosecution would appeal in this regard.
