Pro-BNP lawyers to boycott court proceedings tomorrow
Pro-BNP lawyers will boycott all court proceedings across the country for two and an half hours Sunday as part of its five-day programme protesting police action on them.
Rafiqul Islam Miah, president of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, a platform of lawyers loyal to BNP, made the announcement from a rally at the Jatiya Press Club.
In face of the police obstructions, the lawyers failed to hold their prescheduled rally on the SC premises this morning.
The law enforcers also detained around 30 lawyers for their attempt to enter the HC premises defying the police obstruction.
Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, told The Daily Star that 17 lawyers and an assistant of a lawyer were taken to the police station after their detention.
While at least 12 lawyers were kept at Shahbagh Police Station, a source at the police station said. Officials at the police station whishing anonymity said the number may be higher.
According to the programme, the lawyers will boycott all court proceedings across the country from 10:30am to 1:00pm tomorrow.
The other programmes include brining out black-flag processions at all court premises for three days -- Monday, Wednesday and Thursday -- while the lawyers will form a human chain at court premises on Tuesday.
The forum was to hold a rally on the apex court's premises at 10:00am protesting abduction and killing of seven people in Narayanganj and demanding justice and establishment of rule of law in the country.
The law enforcers also put up barbed wire barricades at Mazar Gate since morning to bar the lawyers from entering the HC premises.
The lawmen made the obstructions saying the pro-BNP lawyers did not seek permission from the SC authorities. There is a High Court order barring rallies on the Supreme Court premises, police said.
