Pro-AL men indulge in factional violence again in 2 districts
At least 45 people were injured and 20 shops, two motorcycles and four rickshaw-vans vandalised in two separate factional clashes centring formation of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League's local committees in Sylhet and Gopalganj yesterday and on Wednesday.
Our staff correspondent in Sylhet reports, 20 people were injured and the vandalism took place during a clash following an attack by a Jubo League faction on a reception scheduled to be accorded on the Sylhet city unit convener of the Awami League's (AL) youth front's on Wednesday evening.
A number of locals said gunshots were heard and police had to fire some seven tear gas shells to bring the situation under control before Monika Cinema Hall in Shamimabad after around two hours at 9:30pm.
Local Jubo League activists Arman Ahmed and Sadikuzzaman, also the reception's organisers, said the attack, which they said was also participated by unruly BCL men, was centring the city unit convening committee's formation in July.
This was confirmed by the convener, Alam Khan Mukti.
The committee's formation had seen protests afterwards with allegations arising on how Mukti was given the charge since his past affiliation was with pro-AL student organisation BCL, not Jubo League. Mukti said it did not matter where he served as long as it was pro-AL.
Our Gopalganj correspondent reports, at least 25 people were injured in a clash erupting when two processions of BCL factions met before Press Club around noon yesterday.
Police fired rubber bullets to quell the activists, spreading to Government Bangabandhu College premises and the Post Office intersection.
Local sources said there was resentment among activists deprived of posts against the district unit BCL president and general secretary who are accused of declaring the convening committees of Gopalganj sadar, town and college units without holding a convention.
The accused refuted the allegation.
