President orders stern steps against arsonists
Terming those involved in the killing of innocent people by launching petrol bomb and arson attacks as enemy of democracy, humanity and civilisation, President Abdul Hamid has asked the law enforcement agencies to take strict legal measures against them.
"I'm deeply shocked along with the countrymen over killing of innocent people by throwing petrol bombs and launching arson attacks on motor vehicles . . . those who are involved in it are enemy of democracy, humanity and civilization and I urge the law enforcement personnel to take strong legal steps against them," the president said while address a programme organised as part of ongoing 'Police Week 2015' at Bangabhaban in Dhaka today.
He paid respect to the people who were killed in petrol bomb and arson attacks recently and conveyed his sympathy to members of their bereaved families.
The president also urged the countrymen to assist the law enforcement agencies to bring those who are killing people to book.
He said the people of Bangladesh love democracy and it was the main objective of the Liberation War.
"It is natural that there will be difference of opinion in a democratic society and it is the beauty of democracy also," he said adding that it is important to practice democratic norms and principles including showing tolerance and mutual respect to others.
The president said a modern and people-friendly police force is needed for a democratic country. "So members of police will have to remain active in giving people overall security and legal assistance from their respective position," he said.
"Rule of law largely depends on nabbing the criminals, handing them over to the law and carrying out proper investigation," he said.
"Each and every member of the police force will have to discharge their duties rising above all personal gains for the interest of the country and the people through maintaining highest professionalism and neutrality. . . . . you have to remain alert so that none can raise question about your responsibilities and duties," said the President.
Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh police have already achieved people's confidence as a pro-people and service-oriented organisation because of sincere efforts of the members of police and hoped that the police would continue to play such pro-people role in future.
Appreciating the police for their role in curbing militancy, he said this role has highly been acclaimed at the national and international level. The President hoped that Bangladesh police would continue to discharge their duties to establish rule of law and protect constitution and democracy in future.
Referring to different measures taken by the present government for turning the police force into a modern and technology based organization, the President said the government has created over 32, 000 new posts, including 739 cadre ones, during 2009-2014. "Besides, some specialized units such as Industrial Police, Special Security and Protection Battalion, Police Bureau of Investigation, Tourist Police and Naval Police have been formed to provide people services easily," he added.
The president paid respect to the police personnel who were killed while discharging duties during 2013-2014.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan, Home Secretary Md Mozammel Haque Khan and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shahidul Haque were present at the programme.
