Power restored to all parts of country: Minister
Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power and energy, has said power was restored to all parts of the country but refused to give any specific detail of the glitch that plunged the entire nation into the blackout for 10 hours yesterday.
“We don’t want to give any details right now. We have already formed a technical committee to find out the specific reason for the power outage. We will comment after they report.”
The state minister also avoided a direct answer when journalists asked him about the specifics of the economic losses sustained during the blackout.
Terming the blackout as “blessing in disguise”, the junior minister said the government had decided to establish a backup of the entire system to avert any similar incident in the future.
“Today (Sunday), the demand for electricity was 4,900 megawatt. The production was apt. There is no deficit of electricity in the country today.”
Regarding to queries on reports that Kurmitola General Hospital was still under blackout, the minister said it might be a problem of the distribution system.
“We did not lose any power plant units, which is customary during a glitch of this magnitude.”
“You should all see that Bangladesh was united during the incident. And, if we are united, we can counter any challenge in our path,” the minister said.
The government had told yesterday that a sudden technical glitch in the power system in Bheramara led to the collapse of the entire power grid throughout the country.
People suffered the most at hospitals, with water supply, mobile and internet services, ATM booths, street lights throughout the country.
