Modi on al-Qaeda hit list: Indian cops
Three al-Qaeda operatives arrested from South India were allegedly planning to kill 22 top leaders, including the countries Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The country was put on fresh terror alerts after three suspected al-Qaeda operatives were arrested from Madurai in Tamil Nadu by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday, the police said.
The agency raided several areas in the city to round up the suspected terrorists, who were operating an al-Qaeda cell. Interrogation revealed that the three had allegedly planned to kill 22 top leaders of the country, including Modi.
The trio had also been threatening foreign embassies across the country. The operatives were identified as M Khareem, Asif Sultan Mohammed and Abbas Ali.
Khareem was arrested from Usmannagar while Asif Sultan Mohammed was picked up from G R Nagar and Abbas Ali from Ismailpuram, the police said. Explosive materials were also seized from them.
The police said the NIA raided several places on specific information that suspected al-Qaeda activists were operating from South Tamil Nadu in and around Madurai.
The agency is looking for two other suspected operatives, Hakeem and Dawood Sulaiman, the Madurai police said.
