Govt enacting laws to ‘curb freedom of expression’: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has criticised the government for its move to enact laws preventing people from speaking freely.
“New laws are being enacted frequently. People will have to face life-term imprisonment or to pay a crore of taka under the laws if anyone speaks freely,” Fakhrul said while addressing a discussion at the Dhaka Reporter’s Unity this afternoon.
Fakrul made the remark a day after the cabinet approved a draft law proposing punishment up to life imprisonment for spreading negative propaganda through digital devices against the Liberation War and the Father of the Nation.
As per the law, an offender could also face a fine of Tk 1 crore, instead of life imprisonment, or both for committing the offence.
About closer of many news portals like Amar Desh, he urged the government to allow the authorities to run their news portals for the sake of the freedom of expression.
Rampal for govt’s own interest
Fakhrul said the government is constructing Rampal coal-fired power plant near Sundarbans for its own interest.
To meet its desire, it is carrying out attacks on people who are waging a protest against the government move to set up the Rampal power plant near the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans.
Amar Desh Paribar in association with the Engineers’ Association of Bangladesh organised the discussion demanding the immediate release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman.
