Fakhrul fears vote rigging in RCC polls
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed his apprehension of massive vote rigging in the Rangpur City Corporation election and called upon the party men to remain watchful at all centres to resist the possible attempt.
“Awami League is a party of thieves and it steals people’s votes. Please keep your (BNP men) watchful eyes at all the polling centres to resist them (AL men),” Fakhrul came up with the call taking part in the electioneering of the RCC polls scheduled to be held on December 21.
Calling upon the city dwellers to cast their votes for the sheaf of paddy (election symbol of BNP) in a disciplined and peaceful manner, Fakhrul said the government will not be changed but a message will be given it through the election that the people do not want it anymore.
“You people will have to decide through the election whether you will be repressed by the fascist government,” he said.
Accusing Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad of influencing the RCC polls, Fakhrul said BNP men are being threatened and harassed by the ruling quarter in many ways ahead of the election.
“This threat and harassment are indicating that the polls will not be held in a free and fair manner under the supervision of the present government,” he added.
Hours after exchanging pleasantries with him in a flight, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir accused Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad of influencing the RCC polls despite being the Prime Minister’s special convoy.
Earlier in the day, Ershad and Fakhrul left Dhaka for Saidpur in a flight of US-Bangla Airlines around 10:30 am to take part in the election campaign in favour of the respective party nominated mayoral candidates.
The RCC goes to polls on December 21 while the curtain on the election campaign falls on Tuesday midnight.
Outgoing mayor Sarfuddin Ahmed is contesting the election to retain his mayoral position with Awami League ticket while Kausar Zaman Babla and Mostafizur Rahman Mostaf with BNP and Jatiya Party tickets respectively.
