Fakhrul demands fresh general election
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today reiterated the demand for a fresh general election under a non-partisan election-time administration and an independent election commission.
“The general election of 2014 was not a real one and so we demand a fresh general election,” he said while addressing a programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity this afternoon.
“Search committee or whatever it is you (govt) can form to appoint new election commissioners. But it will have to be neutral and impartial, otherwise, we will not accept it,” Fakhrul said.
The term of Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led current election commission is going to expire in February next year.
Fakhrul also accused Awami League of creating a “democratic vacuum” in the country.
“Awami League is working in a planned manner to destroy the country’s democracy and it is not Awami League, rather someone from outside is running the country,” Fakhrul added.
