Assault on cops: Fakhrul among 74 indicted, trial Dec 4
A Dhaka court today framed charges against BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 73 others in connection with a 2012 case filed for assaulting police.
Fakhrul and 35 others, now on bail, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Mashud Seikh read out the charges to them.
The court cancelled bails of 38 others and issued arrest warrants against them as they remained absent during the charge framing hearing today. The court fixed December 4 to start trial of the case.
Earlier in the day the court rejected 36 petitions submitted for discharging Fakhrul and others.
On December 9, 2012, a group of leaders and activists, of the then 18-party alliance, led by BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul brought out a procession and at a point they allegedly assaulted policemen and prevented them from discharging their duties during a blockade in front of Capital hotel in the city’s Paltan area, according to the prosecution.
They also allegedly blasted nine crude bombs that left several policemen injured.
Later a case was filed against Fakhrul and several others with Paltan Police Station.
On July 28, 2014 the investigation officer of the case pressed charges against Fakhrul and 73 others for their alleged involvement with assaulting policemen, preventing them from discharging their duties and creating anarchy in the city’s Paltan area.
